Welcome to the home of Toronto Beer Week! We are resting after a very successful week, but not for long. The 2012 edition is being planned as we speak - stay tuned for the announcement of our 2012 dates!
Zack Weinberg was one of the winning homebrewers from the 2011 Toronto Beer Week HomeBrew competition and his prize was a brew day with the Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Etobicoke.
Together with Great Lakes brewer, Mike Lackey, Weinberg brewed his Kama Stoutra Indian Imperial Stout on November 29, which will be featured on January 12th at Project X (a monthly event hosted at Great Lakes). In this short video, Weinberg fills you in on the ingredients he uses to produce the beer and describes the experience of brewing his beer on a commercial scale.
(Toronto, ON, December 5, 2011) – The Amsterdam Brewing Company, Toronto’s independently owned and operated craft brewer, has just released a limited batch of the Toronto Beer Week Homebrew Competition winning beer – ‘The Nightman Cometh Black IPA’.
Jeremy Skorochid from Waterloo, Ontario is the brewer behind The Nightman Cometh Black IPA and was invited to the Amsterdam Brewing Company to make a production size batch of his award winning beer after it placed 1st in the Toronto Beer Week Homebrew Competition in September.
Having been brewing for a year and a half, The Nightman Cometh Black IPA is Jeremy’s 2nd version of this particular beer and named after a scene from the hit comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Brewed with chinoook and citra hops, The Nightman Cometh Black IPA has a roasty malt character up front balanced by a citrus aroma and hop bitterness. The beer is dry hopped with vast quantities of citra hops and comes in at 8.6% ABV.
The Nightman Cometh Black IPA was not Jeremy’s only win at the Toronto Beer Week Homebrew Competition. His Imperial Coffee Stout and Barley wine also took gold medals in their categories along with a silver medal for his wheat beer.
The Nightman Cometh Black IPA is available exclusively at the Amsterdam Brewery Retail Store.
On Friday September 16th, members of the Toronto Beer Week Ltd (TBW) team gathered at the Amsterdam Brewery with members of the local media, brewers, brewery representatives, publicans and passionate craft beer drinkers to officially kick off the 2011 edition of TBW.
The launch was a great success and did in fact start the 9 days of beer events off on the right foot. The City of Toronto deemed TBW as an Event of Municipal Significance and the with that we have some big plans already brewing (sorry for the pun) for the 2012 edition.
For those of you who couldn’t make it to the launch, here is a full length video for you to enjoy.
Also, don’t forget about the TBW Share Your TBW Memories contest. Send us your photos, or your videos, or draw us a cartoon, or write a piece about Toronto Beer Week, and you could win valuable prizes from the following establishments: C’est What, Monk’s Table, Stout Irish Pub, The Abbot, The 3 Brewers**. Entries will be judged by the infinitely wise TBW board members, over a beer of course. By submitting your contributions you give permission to Toronto Beer Week to post them on the TBW website. You will, needless to say, be credited. Just not paid. If we had any money, we’d spend it on beer.
We’ve already received some pretty solid entries, so get your’s in soon. We’ll be making some decisions by the end of October! Send your submissions to troy@torontobeerweek.com for your chance to win!
The results are in! The best in show winners of an all expenses paid trip to the Craft Brewer’s Conference in San Diego are Eric Ecclestone and Russ Burdick for Monk’s Elixir, a tasty Belgian quad with cherries. Congratulations!
In addition to that, four great craft breweries have stepped forward and will brew the immediate runners-up. These are the beers that were selected by our panel of brewers:
Tim Gregory – Doc’s Feet Dubbel [Beau's Pick]
Jeremy Skorochid – The Nightman Cometh [Amsterdam's Pick]
Nicholas Verlaine – Springer Premium Bitter [The Granite's Pick]
Zack Weinberg – Kama Stoutra Indian Imperial Stout [Great Lakes' Project X Pick]
All other winners will be receiving their prizes in the mail over the next few weeks! Thanks for participating in a hard-fought contest and best of luck to everyone for next year!
First off, from everyone with the TBW team, we would like to thank you for entering this year’s Toronto Beer Week HomeBrew Contest and making it a huge success. We had 247 entries over 24 categories, and the quality was remarkable and a testament to the strength of our homebrewing scene. Unfortunately there could only be 24 winners. Those winning gold will advance through to the second round, which will occur at the Great Lakes Harvest Fest this coming weekend, and will be judged by brewers or representatives from five breweries. If you’ve made it through to the second round you have won something, and how you place in that round will determine what. We have also awarded silver and bronze awards to the 2nd and 3rd placing beers in each category. You may not have won a prize but you should be damn proud of doing well in a very hard fought contest! Feedback on individual entries will start filtering through after TBW is over. We’re slow typers, so please excuse us for the delay… Read More »
Kicking off the 2nd annual Toronto Beer Week with a Party Join Us On Friday September 16th At The Amsterdam Brewery
September 12, 2011 (Toronto, ON) – The last party of the summer is set to begin. On Friday September 16th the 2nd annual Toronto Beer Week will hit the city with events at 50 of Hogtown’s finest establishments. We’d like to kick off the week early, which is why the first official cask will be tapped at the Amsterdam Brewing Company (21 Bathurst Street) at 12pm on Friday, which will be followed up with a number of unique Amsterdam offerings.
Last year’s launch was conducted by Steve Peters, the outgoing Speaker of Legislative Assembly of Ontario at the Mill Street Brewpub. While we’re keeping the same theme, we’re moving a little to the west and kicking things off at Amsterdam, who have been serving up great brews to the local market since 1985. Amsterdam epitomise the bright future of our local craft beer scene, having introduced a wide array of different styles in the past few years, as well as instituting a barrel-aging program for select creations. For the launch, the Amsterdam brew team have prepared a number of special one-off beers that display the full-range of flavours possible in the world’s favourite beverage. The Toronto Beer Week team will also have TBW t-shirts on site and will be handing out tickets to the Premium Beer Experience to lucky individuals! Complimentary snacks will also be available. If you consider yourself a sophisticated beer lover who appreciates the time and effort that goes into creating the perfect brew, this experience is for you. It’s an experience for the distinguished beer drinker. From craft beers to boutique beers, cooking with beer and beer cocktails this is the Ultimate Beer Experience.
Each brewery has either brewed something totally unique specifically for this event, or they are bringing you a brand new brew that hasn’t hit the shelves yet! Beer is our focus at this event, but we’ll have a couple of other choices for you if you like to change things up, plus The Berkeley Church will wow us again with delectable bites from their talented kitchen. Can’t forget to mention there will also be live music from some great local talent.
Try them all or just sample a few. This is a pay as you go event. Sample vouchers are available on both levels of the church and cost $1 each. Most beers are one voucher for a 4oz sample. Food samples range 2-4 vouchers, depending on size and food costs of the item.
Each stop along the crawl will feature prizes like Spearhead swag, the occasional pint, TBW t-shirts and more! You’ll need a TTC pass as we’ll be travelling across Toronto on our transit system, making our way to our final destination – Stout Irish Pub, where both groups will have the opportunity to debate which crawl was better.
Bring your camera’s – there will be many opportunities to get something put together for our TBW “Share You Memories” contest (coming soon).

This stands as a testament to the skill, expertise and passion of Canadian homebrewers–and it’s for this very reason that we’re announcing Toronto Beer Week’s 2nd annual HomeBrew Contest.
Please check out the HomeBrew Contest page for more information, including rules and a sign-up form.
